Hudson: From Shy Student to Shining Star

Eighth grader Hudson loves being one of “the twins.” Being an identical twin to his brother, Reed, makes for some funny moments at Mancelona Middle School, particularly when teachers and mentors—like CIS Site Coordinator, Ms. Emily—struggle to tell them apart!

Ms. Emily has been a trusted adult in Hudson’s life since third grade, so she sees him as a unique individual, apart from his identity as a twin. Shy by nature, Hudson is timid in group settings, which can impact his participation in the classroom.

Knowing that Hudson has much to say and share, Ms. Emily selected him for a leadership role in the Student Voices for Healthy Choices program during his seventh grade year. The program, which is a student-led effort that educates young people on the benefits of fitness, health, and nutrition, was a chance for Hudson to shine.

“This program is great for kids who are not always selected for traditional leadership roles in school. They may not see themselves as leaders, but they are at heart,” noted Ms. Emily.

Hudson’s mom, Gayle, supported the idea wholeheartedly, as it would give her son the opportunity to learn new skills. A champion for CIS since her children were in elementary school, Gayle knew that CIS could help Hudson overcome his challenges and soar.

“The CIS Coordinators connect so well with the children they support,” observed Gayle. “Each team member truly has a heart for kids, and they want to see each child succeed.”

Over the course of the year, Hudson left his comfort zone behind, presenting to the school’s leadership team, planning logistics, and collaborating with peers. As the emcee of the Student Voices for Healthy Choices presentation, Hudson cast his shyness aside and took to the mic like a natural.

When Hudson seized the mike, he also seized his potential.

“Hudson held that microphone and entertained a crowd with ease. To see him take the microphone and run with it amazed me as a parent. It amazed his teachers, too,” Gayle remembered.

Wishing you a great start to eighth grade, Hudson! We know that you will continue to shine.
