Wyatt: On Finding His Place at School

When Wyatt entered middle school, he faced challenges that made school feel overwhelming. Struggling with social
connections and confidence, he often felt lost in the day-to-day routines.

That changed in 6th grade when he was connected with Site Coordinator Shyenne through Communities In Schools of
Northwest Michigan.

“Before, he didn’t know where to go—he was just kind of lost,” his mom shared. “Since he’s been working with Shyenne, he
always has a place. She’s become one of his people.”

With consistent support, Wyatt began to grow—in confidence, connection, and presence. Shyenne provided not only
academic and emotional guidance, but a safe space where he felt seen and supported. From helping him navigate tough
moments to creating opportunities to build friendships, Shyenne played a key role in Wyatt’s transformation.

“There were times he just needed a friend, and she helped him find one. She gives him space to be himself.”
For Wyatt’s mom, the support has been just as meaningful.

“As a working mom, I can’t always be there. But with Shyenne, it’s almost like having a second mom at school. I get
updates, I can ask questions, and I don’t have to worry. She’s my bridge between home and school.”

Wyatt’s story is a reminder of why Being Present Matters. Having a caring adult who shows up—consistently,
compassionately, and without judgment—can change the trajectory of a student’s life.

“This program has been a godsend,” his mom said. “If your child needs emotional or academic support—or just someone to
be there—it’s worth it. And if you’re a donor thinking about giving, absolutely do it. These kids need it.”
