Big Impact. Big Results.

Communities In Schools is a learning organization committed to ongoing use of data and research to improve practice and drive positive outcomes for the schools and students it serves. To this end, CIS has invested in third-party evaluations to validate the CIS model and help build an evidence base for Integrated Student Supports. This third-party evaluation conducted by MDRC as part of the Social Innovation Fund found evidence of positive effects of Integrated Student Supports and case management for at-risk students and low performing schools. Additionally, MDRC provided recommendations that have been embraced by CIS to improve practice and upgrade its standards under the Total Quality System.

Sharing Our Successes

How CIS Helped Eliza Find Herself

A senior at Kalkaska High School, one of the biggest choices Eliza made during her high school career wasn't just to make it to graduation day — it was to discover who she truly was. Getting to that point took growth, self-reflection, and the courage to make difficult choices, and Communities In Schools® (CIS®) of Northwest Michigan was there to support her every step of the way.

Morgan is Finishing Strong with CIS

Morgan’s senior year at Kalkaska High School wasn’t easy. Each day felt like a challenge, and even getting out of bed was a forced effort. But Morgan kept showing up. Because “Being Present Matters” isn’t just a phrase to her — it’s a choice. A decision to keep going, even on the hardest days.

Building Strong Connections Through Mentorship

Strong communities are built on connection, and mentorship is one of the most powerful ways to support young people. Through a collaborative partnership between Communities In Schools of Northwest Michigan (CIS), Kalkaska Middle School, Mancelona Middle School, and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), students are being matched with consistent, caring mentors who provide guidance, friendship, and encouragement throughout the school year.

Wyatt: On Finding His Place at School

When Wyatt entered middle school, he faced challenges that made school feel overwhelming. Struggling with social connections and confidence, he often felt lost in the day-to-day routines.

Jelena: On Finding Strength in a Safe Space

“Ms. Davenport being present changed the trajectory of my senior year.” For one high school senior, everything shifted the moment she found a safe haven in Ms. Davenport’s room during lunch. What started as a place to hang out quickly became something much deeper—a space where she could be her unabashed self, free from judgment and surrounded by encouragement.

Naomi: Support That Makes a Difference

Naomi, a high school senior, found the support she needed through her Communities In Schools site coordinator, Mrs. Rau. From organizing her schedule and helping her manage stress, to preparing for her driver’s permit with mock tests and paperwork, Mrs. Rau was by Naomi’s side every step of the way.
“I appreciate the CIS Site Coordinator at my son’s school! She took on the responsibility of checking in with him daily and if it wasn’t for her there is no way I could keep him on task while he is at school. Not only does the Site Coordinator help him get his work done, she understands how he thinks and what he needs to be productive. My son told me he feels comfortable with the Site Coordinator and that’s huge as he is a quiet kid and doesn’t connect with many adults.”
