CIS Growth Community

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Northwest Michigan is among seven CIS affiliates selected for growth by National CIS.

CIS of Northwest Michigan has the unique opportunity to expand our CIS Model of services to as many as 10 additional schools throughout Northwest Michigan. National CIS will provide 50% funding to be matched by community investments for the expansion project.  During the 2017/18 school year, CIS of Northwest Michigan will expand into an additional 5 school sites located in the following school districts:

  • Central Lake Public Schools
  • Forest Area Community Schools
  • Kalkaska Public Schools
  • Suttons Bay Public Schools

This expansion will increase the number of students served from 1,000 to 2,700. Additional schools will be identified in the 2018/19 school year for an expansion into 10 school sites during the two year time period with a potential of serving over 3,500 students annually.

CIS uses a nationally recognized model of services known as Integrated Students Supports. The unique model positions site coordinators inside schools to assess students’ needs and provide resources to help them succeed in the classroom and in life. Whether it’s food, school supplies, health care, counseling, academic assistance or a positive role model, CIS does what it takes to allow kids to focus in the classroom so they can succeed.

“It’s critical to reach more at-risk students in our country with a model of services that’s proven to work,” said Gary Chapman, executive vice president of Communities In Schools.  “Based on our careful review of CIS of Northwest Michigan’s capacity and plans for growth, we believe they are poised to reach more students quickly and with quality.”

“Each day our site coordinators meet the needs of our young people who sometimes just need a caring adult in their lives,” said Amy Burk, CIS of Northwest Michigan executive director. “But for every child we equip to succeed in the classroom, we know there are many more in need.”
